Woven Label Fold Types Explained

The “fold” of a woven label is how its edges are finished and how it attaches to the garment. The fold you choose affects the label’s look, its visible size and its price. Here are the six options we offer, explained simply.

1. Straight cut (no fold)

The label is cut straight on all sides with no fold. It is sewn on all four sides or heat-sealed directly onto the garment. Best for: hem tags, sleeve labels and any label sewn flat as a badge.

2. Center fold

The most popular fold. The label is folded in half, creating a loop that is sewn into a seam — the classic collar label. The printed face shows on both sides of the fold. Best for: neck labels, where the fold hides inside the seam.

3. End fold

Both ends are folded under, leaving a clean flat face with no raw edges visible. Sewn down on the left and right. Best for: side-seam labels and size labels where you want a neat rectangular finish.

4. Manhattan fold

Similar to a center fold, but the top edge is folded slightly forward, creating a small lip. This is the premium collar-label finish you see on high-end garments. Best for: brands that want a tailored, luxury feel at the neck.

5. Miter fold

Both ends are folded under at an angle, forming a clean point — like a ribbon end. Sewn at the top edge. Best for: sleeve and hem labels where a decorative pointed end looks sharp.

6. Iron-on (no-sew) backing

Any of the above folds can be finished with a heat-activated adhesive backing instead of sewing. You apply it with a household iron or heat press. Best for: small batches, kids’ clothing and anyone without access to a sewing machine.

Which fold should you choose?

For a standard clothing brand: center fold for the main neck label, end fold for size/care labels. If you are unsure, start your design and tell us where each label goes — we will recommend the right fold before production. Production takes 2–3 working days after design approval.

Related questions

Does the fold affect the price?
Folded labels cost slightly more than straight-cut ones because of the extra finishing step, but the difference is small. The fold type never changes the 1,000-piece minimum order.

What size should I order for a center-fold label?
Order by flat size but design for the folded face — a 2″ × 1″ label with a center fold shows a 2″ × 0.5″ face. See our size guide.

Can I combine different folds in one order?
Yes, but each fold type counts as a separate setup, so plan your quantities per fold.
